Loy Krathong Festival 2022 (ลอยกระทง 2565) falls on 8 November 2022, the full moon day of the twelve month of the Thai lunar calendar. Colloquially known as the Thai Lantern Festival, it is on this day that lanterns are released into the river to worship Thai Goddess of Water (Phra Mae Khongkha พระแม่คงคา).
In northern Thailand, Loy Krathong Festival usually coincides with another festival called Yi Peng Festival. Yi Peng Festival is part of the Lanna culture and flying lanterns are released into the air in hope of good fortune.
For the first time in 3 years, Loi Krathong will be celebrated in more than 40 locations throughout Bangkok!
The tradition of releasing lanterns into the river will mainly be held along the Chao Phraya River. Head on to these places in the evening between 6 to 8 November 2022 to bask in the festive atmosphere:
On the 7 & 8 November 2022, Loy Krathong celebrations will also be held at ICONSIAM and 31 other locations from Lat Krabang, Sathorn, Don Mueang, Bang Khae, Phra Nakhon, to Chatuchak district.
In Thailand’s second largest city Chiangmai, the Yi Peng Festival will take place from 7 – 9 November 2022 around the city moat and the Chiang Mai Municipal Office.
And on the 9 November, a big krathong parade, a Yi Peng beauty queen and Godfather contest will be held at the renowned historical site, Pratu Tha Phae.
