What is the Special Tourist Visa (STV)?
The Special Tourist Visa (STV) is a scheme launched by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) for tourists to spend an extended stay in Thailand.
The STV allows tourists to stay in Thailand for 90 days and can be extended twice for a further 90 days each time. The STV application and extension cost 2,000 Baht each.
Boost tourist spending
According to the official statement released on 28 September 2021 by Deputy Government Spokesperson, Ms. Traisuree Taisaranakul, the Special Tourist Visa scheme aims to attract foreign families with high purchasing power to boost local domestic spending in Thailand.
Since its introduction in October 2020, Thailand has welcomed a total of 5,609 visitors on long-term basis under the STV scheme. This has generated at least 1,243 million Baht in tourist spending.
The majority of visitors came from China, Croatia, Denmark, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Singapore, and Spain. The top destinations of choice within Thailand include Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chonburi (Pattaya), Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Rayong, Surat Thani (Ko Samui), and Udon Thani.
