Vegetarian Festival 2025, also known as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival (九皇勝會 / เทศกาลกินเจ), will return for 10 days from 20 – 29 October 2025.
In keeping with traditions, a series of events will take place across Thailand, from the eve through to the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese lunar calendar, with major celebrations in Phuket and Bangkok. Devotees will observe a strict vegetarian diet as a form of spiritual and physical purification, accompanied by ceremonial rituals, religious street processions, and cultural performances to mark the occasion.
Originating as a Taoist festival brought to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore by Chinese immigrants centuries ago, it has since become a deeply rooted tradition and an important part of Thai cultural heritage.
Phuket Vegetarian Festival 2025
Religious and celebratory activities of the Jae Festival (as it is known in Thai) are the most intense in Phuket. Devotees undergo spiritual purification by observing a strict vegetarian diet and taking part in religious rituals, including fire-walking and piercing their cheeks and tongues during street processions.
This year, 39 Taoist shrines across the province will host a range of ceremonies and activities from 21 – 29 October 2025 (Tuesday to Wednesday).
From 23 – 29 October 2025 (Thursday to Wednesday), daily street processions will be held, with multiple shrines participating each day. The guide below highlights seven popular shrines in Phuket Town, one for each day, along with the schedule of their key rituals and events for this year.
